Solar panels are only one part of a residential solar project. The goal of a solar panel comparison is therefore not to identify one universal winner. It is to find the system that fits your home and compare proposals on an equivalent basis. Start by gathering at least two or three itemized quotes, then check whether each proposal uses the same assumptions about annual electricity use, system production, utility compensation, financing, and future energy needs.

How to estimate

Use the same basic calculation for every quote. The purpose is to compare proposals consistently, not to replace a site-specific design or utility review.

1. Estimate the system’s annual production

Ask each installer for an annual production estimate in kilowatt-hours (kWh), along with the assumptions used. Review the roof planes included, shading analysis, panel orientation, tilt, inverter losses, and any expected degradation. Do not compare a quote’s panel count alone; compare the proposed system size and predicted annual output.

If an installer provides only panel wattage, a simple starting calculation is:

System size in kilowatts (kW) = panel count × panel wattage ÷ 1,000

This does not calculate actual production. A production estimate must account for local solar conditions and system losses. Treat any rough estimate as a screening tool until an installer supplies a documented design.

2. Compare expected electricity coverage

Use your recent utility bills or interval data to estimate annual household consumption. Then calculate:

Estimated solar coverage = annual solar production ÷ annual household consumption × 100

A proposal designed to offset nearly all annual use may not eliminate every bill. Fixed utility charges, seasonal production, export rules, and changes in household consumption can affect the result. If you plan to add an EV, heat pump, heat-pump water heater, or electric cooking equipment, ask the installer to model that future load rather than sizing the system only for today’s usage.

3. Compare total cost rather than the headline payment

For a cash purchase, record the total installed price and divide it by the proposed system size:

Price per watt = total installed price ÷ system size in watts

This figure is useful only when the quotes include comparable work. Check whether each price includes permitting, interconnection, roof attachments, trenching, main-panel upgrades, monitoring, sales tax, removal of an old system, and post-installation support.

For a loan or other financing option, compare the total amount repaid, interest rate, fees, term, payment schedule, and any escalation or prepayment conditions. A low initial payment is not enough to establish that financing is affordable or competitive.

Panel comparison: what deserves attention

Efficiency is useful when roof space is limited, but it should not be treated as a complete measure of value. Using the illustrative prices, Quote A works out to $3.00 per watt and Quote B to about $2.97 per watt. That difference alone is not decisive. If Quote B excludes a service-panel upgrade or has a shorter workmanship warranty, its apparent price advantage may disappear. Conversely, if Quote A’s extra production results from a more suitable roof layout, the additional cost may be reasonable for that home.

For a home using 10,000 kWh annually, the illustrative coverage would be 92% for Quote A and 90.5% for Quote B. Neither result promises a zero bill, and both should be revisited if the household expects major changes in electricity use.

When to recalculate

Revisit your solar panel comparison whenever a material input changes. At minimum, recalculate before signing if an installer changes the equipment, system size, roof layout, financing, or scope of work.

  • Pricing changes: Recheck the cash price, financing total, deposit, and any add-on work after a revised proposal.
